    Client Alert: A Reminder – New York State’s Minimum Wage Will Increase December 31

    New York employers will face a series of state-wide minimum wage increases beginning in 2024 and continuing indefinitely after 2027 in accordance with the Consumer Price Index.

    Client Alert: Pay Transparency Law Takes Effect in New York State

    As a reminder, New York State employers with at least 4 employees are now (as of 9/17/2023) required to disclose the compensation range they are willing to pay a successful applicant for any advertised job, promotion, or transfer, including to a pool of potential internal applicants (“Job Posting”). This should be familiar to New York City employers, which are already subject to similar requirements.

    Client Alert: Updated Form I-9 Released

    On August 1, 2023, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (“DHS”) released a new version of the Form I-9. Employers must begin using this new Form I-9 by November 1, 2023. After October 31, 2023, employers who continue to use the previous version may be subject to applicable penalties under section 274A of the Immigration and Nationality Act.

    Client Alert: Department of Homeland Security Announces Updated Form I-9 and Remote Verification Procedure

    On July 21, 2023, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (“DHS”) announced an updated Form I-9 and remote I-9 verification procedure (referred to by DHS as “the Alternative Procedure”). Employers will be required to use the updated Form I-9 starting November 1, 2023. Separately, employers who were unable to review employees’ Form I-9 documents in person during the COVID-19 pandemic will be required to examine those documents in person, or through the Alternative Procedure, by August 30, 2023.

    Client Alert: New NYC Law Governing the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Hiring

    NYC has passed a law regarding the use of artificial intelligence in hiring and it is being enforced as of July 5, 2023. The law, Local Law 144 (AI Bias Law), prohibits employers from using artificial intelligence (AI) technology to make hiring or promotional decisions unless certain requirements are met.

    Restaurant chain Pinstripes to go public via $520 million SPAC deal

    Restaurant chain Pinstripes, which offers Italian food along with bowling and bocce, said on Friday it will go public through a merger with a blank-check firm in a deal valued at about $520 million and plans to list on the New York Stock Exchange around the end of the fourth quarter.

    Adam Dooley’s SPAC to Merge With Debt Servicer Unifund

    Dooley launched the SPAC in 2021, with the goal of acquiring wealth management firms. It now plans to take Unifund, a consumer debt servicer, public in a $238 million deal.

    U.S. securities regulator hits top SPAC auditor with $10 million fine

    The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Wednesday slapped Marcum LLP with a $10 million penalty for standards violations and systemic quality control failures in its audit work for hundreds of special purpose acquisition companies, or SPACs.
